TERP DUALITY: PROFESSIONALS & BUSINESS OWNERS
If I may be bold, I would like to say that interpreters are awesome!
At our job, no doubt. But at building and running a business, not so much.
This is our first dichotomy, sort of an identity crisis. We work so hard to master the art of interpreting and yet we relegate developing any business skills to the point of even consider them unnecessary or un-interpreter-like.
We say to ourselves that only those interpreters seeking to serve their own direct clients should concern themselves with the likes of business plans and marketing strategies to the point of willingly going into the ‘job’ market with no roadmap of any kind.
The problem is that, in doing so, we end up limping through our professional lives trying to make progress armed solely with what we can do in the booth and leave everything else to chance.
The biggest benefit of embracing the other side of the equation is that it puts us in the driver’s seat, whether we serve our own clients or choose to collaborate with agencies, colleagues, and/or consultant interpreters.
‘Choose’ being the operative word.
Sitting at the wheel, we can decide where to go, how to get there, how fast to go, when to stop for a break and, even, when to make a U-turn. That is the whole point.
Business plans give us direction. Having a strong brand makes us memorable and relatable. Good marketing strategies leave a trail of breadcrumbs for people to follow and come to us already wanting our services. Networking and contact lists crisis-proof our careers. And the intellectual property we create in the process, our brand included, is an asset in itself.
While mere interpreters – as amazing as we are – skip through life on one leg, terpreneurs™ stand strong on both. And although the road may not always be smooth, it is our foot on the gas.
Personally, I would not have it any other way.
Now that you know, you are responsible for taking control of your business.
If you are ready to shift from interpreter to terpreneur™ then check out my monthly membership, THE TERPRENEUR™ SOCIETY.
At the Society, the emphasis is in the HOW.
Every week, you will learn and little and do a little with group guidance and the support of a community of like-minded colleagues navigating the ins and outs of building and growing their interpreting businesses, just like you.
