Interpreting booths have come a long way since they inception during the Nuremberg Trials after WW2 and are now ISO Certified.
These booths look like the ones in passport control at the airports and weight as much as the average adult gorilla. As unappealing as this sounds, they are your interpreters’ temporary “office” – our “booth office”.
Inside the booth, interpreters work in teams of two, taking turns to compensate the cognitive load of translating simultaneously some of the most complex and technical subject matters in the world.
Outside the booth, a sound technician keeps the whole operation running smoothly between each booth and the audience, between the speakers and each booth, and among booths as well as we sometimes take our colleagues’ translation into a common language to then interpret it into our specific one.
As you can imagine, interpreting booths are not cheap but they are definitely worth the investment, especially for large conferences, big venues, or when there are many languages involved.
